Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and that history still shapes the town today. Mall Road and the Ridge sit at the centre, lined with old wooden buildings, churches, and cafes.

Jakhu Temple sits on the highest point in town, reachable by a short hike or a ropeway ride. Christ Church, built in 1857, is one of the oldest churches in North India.

Kufri, 16 km away, adds pine slopes and snow activities in winter. Toy train rides from Kalka are also popular, running through 100+ tunnels along the way.

Manali sits on the Beas river at around 2,050 metres, and works as the main gateway to Lahaul-Spiti, Leh, and the high passes further north. Hadimba Temple, built in 1553, stands inside a dense deodar forest and remains one of the town's most photographed spots.

Old Manali, across the river, has a cluster of cafes and shops that stay busy till late. Vashisht village, close by, has natural hot sulphur springs used for centuries.

Solang Valley, 14 km from town, runs paragliding, skiing, and a ropeway, making Manali the state's main adventure-sports base.

Kufri sits about 16 km from Shimla at over 2,600 metres, making it one of the easiest places near the capital to see real snow. Between December and February the slopes here turn white and fill up with skiing, sledging and pony rides.

The Himalayan Nature Park, right at the town's entrance, houses native species like the snow leopard and Himalayan black bear among deodar trees. A short hike or horse ride up Mahasu Peak, the highest point in the area, opens up wide views of the Himalayan ranges.

Outside the snow months, the same slopes turn green and quiet, good for a slower walk away from Shimla's crowds. Most visitors treat it as a half-day trip from Shimla rather than an overnight stop.

Dharamshala sits in the Kangra Valley, split between the lower town and upper McLeod Ganj, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1960. This mix gives it a distinct culture of monasteries, Tibetan food, and prayer flags alongside Himachali life.

Bhagsu Nag temple and waterfall sit a short walk from McLeod Ganj, while Triund, a popular day trek, offers views of the Dhauladhar range.

The Kangra valley below grows tea, and the HPCA cricket stadium here is known for being one of the highest-altitude stadiums in the world.

Dalhousie was built by the British in 1854 as a hill station named after Lord Dalhousie, spread across five hills. Colonial-era churches and buildings, like St. John's and St. Francis, still stand from that period.

Khajjiar, 22 km away, is often called "Mini Switzerland" for its flat green meadow ringed by forest, a rare sight in the hills. Panchpula and Satdhara, both near town, are known for natural springs and short walks.

Dalhousie stays quieter than Shimla or Manali, making it a slower, calmer stop for travellers who prefer fewer crowds.

McLeod Ganj sits above Dharamshala at around 2,100 metres and has been home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama since 1960. The Tsuglagkhang Complex, with its main temple and monastery, sits at the centre of town and stays open to visitors most days of the year.

Narrow lanes around the temple are lined with Tibetan bakeries, bookshops and prayer-flag stalls, giving the town a character closer to a Himalayan Buddhist settlement than a typical hill station. The Bhagsu waterfall and the Triund trek, which climbs to a ridge with views of the Dhauladhar range, are the two most popular half-day outings from here.

A cable car connecting Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj now cuts the road journey to a few minutes.
