Discover McLeod Ganj
McLeod Ganj is a small hill town in Himachal Pradesh. It sits above Dharamshala, at a height of about 2,082 metres.
This town is the home of the Dalai Lama and his government-in-exile since 1960. A large Tibetan community lives here. Because of this, you will see many monasteries, prayer flags, and Tibetan food shops around town.
The town also sits close to the Dhauladhar mountain range. On clear days, you can see snow-covered peaks right from the town. This mix of Tibetan culture and Himalayan views makes McLeod Ganj different from other hill stations in India.
McLeod Ganj is well known for its cafes, book shops, and short treks nearby. The Triund trek starts from here and is one of the most popular treks in Himachal Pradesh. It suits many kinds of travellers — trekkers, backpackers, couples, and families who like a calm hill town instead of a crowded one.
A normal day here starts slow. Most visitors have a relaxed breakfast, walk to a monastery or a waterfall, sit at a cafe, and go for a short walk in the hills. This package follows that same easy pace, with one extra day kept for the Triund trek if you want more adventure.

Where to go
Hill stations, valleys and pilgrimage towns — a short guide to what each one actually offers, so you can pick the right combination for your trip.

Triund is a small hilltop near McLeod Ganj at about 2,850 metres, one of the most popular treks in Himachal Pradesh. The 9 km trek from Dharamkot or McLeod Ganj takes 4-5 hours and passes through pine and oak forest with tea stalls along the way. From the top you get full views of the Dhauladhar range, and many trekkers camp overnight to watch the sunset and sunrise. It suits beginners and experienced trekkers alike, though campers should carry warm clothes since nights get cold even in summer.

Bhagsu Falls drops about 20 metres, roughly 2-3 km from McLeod Ganj market on foot, just behind the Bhagsu Nag Temple in Bhagsu village. The temple itself is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the local serpent deity Bhagsu Nag, and sits beside a stone-built kund, or sacred pool, fed by a natural spring channelled through three pipes — many visitors take a cold dip here, believed locally to have healing properties.
According to local legend, a king named Bhagsu once stole water from the sacred Nag Dal Lake, angering the serpent god Nag Devta. The two fought at this spot, and after his defeat, Bhagsu sought forgiveness — the temple and spring are said to mark that reconciliation.
The waterfall runs fullest from July to September, during and after the monsoon, and is at its weakest in the dry winter months, so timing matters if seeing real water flow is the goal.

Right next to the Dalai Lama Temple Complex, this is the Dalai Lama's personal monastery and one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India. Visitors can walk the grounds for free among prayer wheels, prayer flags and murals, and many walk clockwise around the temple as per Tibetan tradition. Morning and evening prayer sessions are open for visitors to sit and watch quietly. It's a calm, peaceful stop worth visiting even if you're not here for religious reasons.

Dharamkot is a laid-back village near McLeod Ganj known for its cafes and yoga retreats. The Tibet Museum shows the history of Tibetan exile through photos and exhibits. St. John in the Wilderness is an old stone church surrounded by deodar trees, close to town.
