Jakhu Temple
Jakhu Temple stands at about 2,455 metres on Jakhu Hill, the highest point in Shimla, roughly a 2-km walk from Mall Road or a short ropeway ride from The Ridge. The temple is dedicated to Hanuman and is linked to the Ramayana legend of Hanuman resting here while carrying the Sanjeevani herb to save Lakshman.
Its best-known feature is the 108-foot Hanuman statue, unveiled in 2010, visible from several points across Shimla town. The original shrine sits just behind it and is believed to be several centuries old. From the hilltop, the temple offers a wide view over Shimla, the Shivalik ranges, and snow-capped peaks on clear days.
A resident troop of langurs and rhesus macaques lives around the complex. They are considered guardians of the temple but are known to snatch food, bags or spectacles from visitors, so guides recommend keeping valuables out of sight.
Kalka-Shimla Toy Train
The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a 96-km narrow-gauge line built by the British and opened for passenger service in 1903, connecting Kalka in the plains to Shimla, then the summer capital of India. It runs on a 2 ft 6 in gauge track and climbs from about 656 metres at Kalka to 2,076 metres at Shimla.
The route passes through 102 tunnels and over 800 bridges, including the long Barog tunnel. In 2008, UNESCO added it to the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site, alongside the Darjeeling and Nilgiri lines.
Today the line mainly runs as a heritage and tourist service, with several classes of train available, and the full one-way journey between Kalka and Shimla takes around 5 to 6 hours.
Christ Church
Christ Church sits on The Ridge in the centre of Shimla and is the second-oldest church in North India, after St John's Church in Meerut. Its foundation stone was laid in 1844 and the church was consecrated in 1857, built in a neo-Gothic style using local grey stone, with a 90-foot steeple that still dominates Shimla's skyline.
Inside, stained glass windows depict the Christian virtues of Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, Patience and Humility; the chancel window was designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of the writer Rudyard Kipling. The church also houses a large pipe organ, installed in 1899 and among the largest in the Indian subcontinent at the time.
The church remains an active place of worship and one of the most-photographed buildings on The Ridge.
