Dharamshala Tour Guide: Places to Visit, McLeod Ganj & Tips

This Dharamshala tour guide starts with the question everyone asks first. Most people say "McLeod Ganj" when they mean Dharamshala, and the confusion is fair — the two run into each other on the same hillside. But Dharamshala is the town in the valley, the district headquarters of Kangra and the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh, while McLeod Ganj is the higher suburb where the Dalai Lama has lived since 1960 and where "Little Lhasa" earned its name.

  • Dharamshala town sits at roughly 1,457 metres in the Kangra Valley, with McLeod Ganj about 9 km above it at around 2,082 m on the Dhauladhar range.
  • District headquarters of Kangra and the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Known for Tibetan culture, the Dalai Lama's residence, monasteries, cafés and the Dhauladhar's most accessible treks — not for high-altitude snow sports.

About Dharamshala

Every Dharamshala tour guide should say this upfront: Dharamshala is really two towns stacked on one hill. Down below it is a regular Kangra Valley town — bus stand, market, offices. Up in McLeod Ganj it is monasteries, prayer wheels and a café scene built by Tibetan refugees since 1959–60. If you are planning a longer trip, our Dharamshala tour package and McLeod Ganj tour package cover both levels with a private cab, so you are not juggling shared taxis between them.
