Pick: Manali for snow
Money matters

Budget: which trip costs more?

Hotel rates in Shimla and Manali are close to each other in the same season. The big difference is the travel. Manali is about 300 km from Chandigarh, while Shimla is about 115 km. A longer drive means a higher cab bill and more time on the road.

In Manali, most people also spend money on fun things: the Rohtang Pass permit, snow clothes on rent, paragliding or rafting. In Shimla, most of the sights are free or cheap, like The Ridge, Mall Road and Christ Church.

So, for the same number of days, a Manali trip usually costs a little more. To save money in both towns, travel from July to September or in early March, and book 4 to 6 weeks early for May, June and December.

Ways to save in Shimla

  • Stay a little outside Mall Road; hotels are cheaper and quieter.
  • Use the public lift from Cart Road to Mall Road.
  • Eat at small dhabas in Lower Bazaar.

Ways to save in Manali

  • Visit Solang or Sissu if Rohtang is closed or the permit is sold out.
  • Rent snow clothes once for the whole day, not at every stop.
  • Choose a weekday for paragliding; rates are lower.
